Throw a Fit

Ever feel angry? Need to stop your feet, slam doors or have an urge to throw things? Well next time you start to feel angry throw a Fit. What is a Fit you ask? A Fit is a little creature that can fit in your pocket. The Fit can be carried around for just the right moment when you feel the need to throw a fit.

Materials:

Yarn

Scissors

Goggly eyes (optional)

Ages: 3-Adult

Purpose:

To help children and adults develop an emotional vocabulary, implement positive coping mechanisms, regulate their bodies, and use prosocial behaviors to express anger.

Steps:

1) Pull out a piece of yarn at least 1 yard long. Allowing the client to determine the length can be helpful in letting them feel ownership in the project.

2) Wrap the piece of yarn in loops 2-3 inches long. As seen in picture to the left.

3) Cut a separate piece from the ball of yarn.

4) Place piece of string around the middle of the looped yarn. See picture to the right. Tie the middle string as tightly as you can without breaking it as this string will provide the support to your Fit.

5) Using scissors (note: for very young children, adults should do this step) cut the loops on either end to form the hair for your Fit.

6) Add goggly eyes to your Fit.

Processing questions:

Here are a list of questions to help your client begin to think of different ways their new Fit can be used to help them process their anger or frustration.

What are some ways your new Fit can help you when feeling angry?

Ask about some of the behaviors the client does when angry. Suggest the client use the Fit to engage in those behaviors such as-throwing the Fit, stomping on the Fit, going for a walk with their Fit, being alone to think with their Fit, etc.

How could your new Fit help you calm down?

Where can you use your Fit?

Use your awesome therapist mind to come up with more questions that best fit your client.

Enjoy your Fit!
